What We Do

Quaker Meadows Chapter, NSDAR, participates in a variety of projects throughout the year. We are dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education for children. Listed below are some of the sponsored activities in which our chapter members are involved.

Historic Preservation

  • Work with others to restore historic cemeteries in which American Revolutionary War Patriots are buried
  • Place DAR markers on graves of American Revolutionary War Patriots
  • Help establish a non-profit foundation and raise funds to preserve and protect a historic church in the county
  • Index American Revolutionary War records through the National Society
  • Work with other historic groups to record family register pages in local bibles
Obeth Cemetery

Members work to preserve the Obeth Cemetery located in Lake James State Park.

A Quaker Meadows Chapter, NSDAR, Daughter in period costume at the historic McDowell House.

 

Members participate in a wreath laying ceremony to commemorate the Battle of Kings Mountain.

 

Patriotism

  • Lay wreaths at memorial services at battlefields in North Carolina and South Carolina
  • March in local parades
  • Ring bells on September 17 to honor the signing of the U.S. Constitution
  • Provide American flags to Habitat for Humanity homeowners
  • Support the veterans at the Charles George Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Center in Asheville, North Carolina

  • Participate in American Revolutionary War reenactments
  • Support Constitution Week education

Members and their families enjoyed an Independence Day parade.

Our regent attends a wreath laying ceremony.

 

Education

  • Present Constitution Week programs to community members
  • Sponsor American History Essay Contests for fifth to eighth grade students
  • Sponsor the Patriots of the American Revolution DAR High School Essay Contest for high school students
  • Present awards to Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) cadets in local high schools
  • Sponsor DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest for high school seniors
  • Support Crossnore Communities for Children
  • Share books of the American Revolutionary War period through our American History Book Club
  • Participate in Revolutionary War Days; a program for local middle school students

In the Historic Burke County Courthouse, members educate the public about the U.S. Constitution. 

A Quaker Meadows Chapter, NSDAR, Daughter rings the bell to celebrate the signing of the U.S. Constitution.

Our DAR Good Citizen Award and Scholarship Contest awardees receive this packet including a sash, pin, and a small cash prize.
